Why EMDR Therapy?
EMDR therapy was created by Dr. Francine Shapiro. EMDR therapy or eye movement desensitization therapy, is not talk therapy. Rather, EMDR therapy focuses on transforming the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that develop from a traumatic event into what you want to believe and feel about yourself and the event. It allows you to take control of your life again and bring positive beliefs about yourself to the forefront.
EMDR therapy has the ability to work faster than other methods of therapy
You do not have to focus on the details of the disturbing event, the goal is to move past the trauma
EMDR therapy can be anywhere from 6-12 sessions or for more complex trauma it can be longer
There is little to no homework between sessions, unlike other forms of therapy
How Does EMDR Therapy Work?
During disturbing events, your brain is unable to network correctly. This can cause new events or subconscious thoughts to incorrectly attach to the traumatic event. As a result of confused network connections and disorganized memories, it can reinforce you to relive negative experiences more often.
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation through eye movements, sound or tapping to activate both sides of the brain. When both sides of the brain are being activated, it allows more efficient processing of information.
When your brain is able to process through the traumatic event more easily, then network connections in your brain are able to resolve to form the appropriate connections. This often results in a decrease of anxiety and depressive symptoms, feeling less consumed with previous triggers and feeling more positive about oneself. Clients often report higher levels of happiness and feeling “healed.”
Can EMDR Therapy Be Done Online?
EMDR therapy can be done online or virtually, with the same outcome. Your EMDR trained therapist will work with you to explain how sessions will be efficiently run. EMDR therapy online allows you the freedom to experience EMDR in the space that you feel safest in.
